Chile’s new law: E-cigarettes and HTP products will be included in the scope of tobacco control and will be implemented from January 2025

According to a report by Latercera on December 19, the Chilean Senate Health Committee, represented by Chairman Senator Javier Macaya and Congressman Juan Luis Castro, and Auditor General Doro Dorothy Pérez talks to you about the progress of some important regulations. Among them, the relevant regulations of e-cigarettes were mainly discussed.

The two lawmakers pointed out that the meeting with the Auditor General was fruitful and they learned that regulations on e-cigarettes and related products will be promulgated before January 5, 2025.

Congressman Castro said the announcement was “good news” as it provides a clear legal framework for the use and regulation of e-cigarettes. He mentioned that this law will take effect on January 5, 2025, and this is also the result of their joint efforts with the executive branch. This regulation is intended to curb the abuse and inappropriate use of e-cigarettes.

On January 4, 2024, Law No. 21.642 was published in the Official Gazette, which amends Law No. 19.419 to prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to minors; Tobacco products are included in the scope of tobacco products; and nicotine-containing and non-nicotine alternative devices are regulated.
