The French Public Health Service (Santé Publique France) pointed out that 23% of French people currently smoke daily, dropping significantly from 25% in 2021 to 29% in 2016.
Dr. Emmanuel Ricard, spokesman for the French Alliance Against Cancer, said,
“This is the first time we see less than a quarter of people smoking daily. This is a very motivational and important figure for us. Tobacco is France’s number one killer and a major cause of chronic diseases.”
The French Alliance Against Cancer noted that cigarette sales fell by 14% between 2021 and 2023, while the number of e-cigarette users increased. Currently, 6% of the population uses e-cigarettes every day, compared with only 3% eight years ago.
